BTCC weekend 14th/15th July 2007

The second major DPRAC trophy was handed out at the weekend in an entertaining weekend of racing. The Muriel Tomlinson Trophy was won by Henry Surtees who was the highest British points earner over the course of the weekend in the Formula BMW UK championship.

The Muriel Tomlinson Trophy is the newest of the Club's trophies, a handsome cup which was presented to the Club by Muriel Tomlinson at the end of her term of office as Chairman. Muriel was a founder member of the Club and presented the Trophy to mark her 25 years of involvement with the Club, during which she has served in a number of posts.

This year, the trophy was once again handed out to the highest British points earner over the weekend in the Formula BMW UK races.

The races are in very quick single seater racing cars and many of the top driver's from this championship are expected to graduate to higher classes.

The BTCC weekend has no less than 6 championships racing which means there is always plenty of action on the track.

In the Formula BMW UK races, Henry Surtees claimed his maiden win in the series in the second race. This was after he finished a disappointing 7th in race 1. This gave him the highest points total for a British driver which meant he won the Muriel Tomlinson Trophy. For a full summary of the races at Donington, click HERE

The weather was not at it's best at the start of the day and race 1 of the BTCC was in "torrential" rain. To start with the racing was fast and frantic with Matt Neal, Mat Jackson, Gordon Shedden and Darren Turner swapping places from the off. It was Shedden who delt with the conditions best and won by over 6 seconds. Matt Neal had to pit to repair a puncture but battled his way to a podium in 3rd. Adam Jones came second for Seat in his Toledo

In race 2 the heavens opened as the cars lined up on the grid. In an eventful first lap, the two halfords civics made it to the front of the pack in the heavy rain.

There were several changes of position over the course of the race and one of the final overtakes was Plato overtaking Shedden on the entry to the craner curves right outside the DPRAC enclosure. That was for the lead and that is how it stayed, with Fabrizio Giovanardi gaining the last podium position in third.

The third race was also in wet conditions but the rain had all but stopped, making the track a little drier than the first 2 races.

Mike Jordan ran at the head of the field to start with in his BTCC spec Integra, but as the race wore on, the Seat drivers of Turner and Plato made themselves known and passed him. Giovanardi had an off track excursion which took him down to 13th.

From 4th to 9th, a six car pack was giving the spectators something to watch with Mat Jackson leading from Turner, Shedden, Turkington, Onslow-Cole and Chilton. Turner ended up 9th with Chilton and Onslow-Cole swapping places finishing 7th and 8th.
