Moto Gp, the biggest event held at Donington this year was played out under good weather (for the GP weekend) and we had a British winner...... albeit not James Toseland as we all were hoping!
The grandstand was packed with motorcycle fanatics yet again with everybody having a great time, even though there sometimes was a little wait to refill your tea's! I'm sure everyone would like to thank everybody on the committee who helped out over the weekend, and the committee and I'm sure all of the DPRAC members who attended would like to thank the kitchen staff who did an excellent job!
With over 90,000 people attending this year, the circuit was packed and on the sunday in the first race, Scott Redding won by a huge margin in 125 terms, but he was made to work for it. The start was a good one for Redding, (for video from the DPRAC enclosure click HERE) who by the first lap was in second. Bradley Smith, the other British hope was down in roughly 10th place. Scott though kept with the leader and as the home support realised Scott was catching, they got behind the British rider which was excellent to see. Near the end, with about 6 laps to go, Scott had caught right up to the back of the leader as they went through Redgate corner, and as both bikes went down through the craners you caught a glimple of one bike falling! Everyone held their breath thinking the worst but the commentator made the home fans cheer as he confirmed Scott was on his own running as he did to the chequered flag. What a way to start the racing!
Sadly I didn't see much of the 250 race but the when the GP bike's were started, everything stopped so everyone could enjoy the feature race. However, the only British rider on the grid did not enjoy his home race at all. If anyone doesn't know, James Toseland sadly dropped his Tech 3 Yamaha at the first corner, (even worse is that he did it by himself, which I only realised when I got home and reviewed the incident!) For a video of the start from the DPRAC enclosure, please click HERE. Give James credit, even though he had bruised his wrist, his bike was missing a footpeg and his pride dented, he got back on and completed the race... and got a standing ovation all of the way around the Donington Park track.
At the front, Casey Stoner won the race in the end making it look easy, leading from start to finish. The number 1 Ducati looked amazingly quick, even though Marco Melandri finished nearly a lap down on the second works Ducati! Rossi finished in second, but only after a tussle with fellow championship contender Dani Pedrosa, who even though he managed to pass Rossi twice, made a mistake each time letting the 7 times world champion past. Dani did well though, finishing third in the end. His teammate, Nicky Hayden on the Works Repsol Honda had a decent weekend with the new Honda engine and looked back to near his best. The end of the race was marred by supporters running onto the track before the race had finished down at the Old hairpin, which was quite frankly dangerous. Once the race had finished, many fans went to see the top three riders on the podium, and then had to endure the traffic to get home! All in all a fantastic day was had and I'm sure we will see familiar faces next year as well!
